Summary
On September 30, 2026, the National Museum of Western Art announced that it will hold the exhibition "Picture within Picture: The Adventure of Painting about Painting. From the Renaissance to Modern Times, and Beyond" as part of its autumn 2027 exhibitions. The exhibition will run from September 18, 2027, to January 16, 2028, and will be co-organized with the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna in Austria. It is organized by the National Museum of Western Art and Yomiuri Shimbun, and will take place at the National Museum of Western Art (7-7 Ueno Koen, Taito-ku, Tokyo). Admission fees are yet to be determined.
"Picture within Picture" refers to a painting depicted within a painting, a significant theme particularly in European art. By incorporating another world inside a painting, artists embedded special meanings and devices. This exhibition will trace how Western painting has thought about and adventured into "painting" and "seeing" through masterpieces from the Renaissance to modern times, marking the first large-scale exhibition of its kind in Japan.
The Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna, known for its world-leading Habsburg collection, will provide full cooperation. Works will also be gathered from major museums around the world that support the exhibition's concept, including the Musée d'Orsay and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
