"Matsumoto Architecture Art Festival 2026 ADVANCE" Second Phase to Open: Lee Ufan, teamLab, Julian Opie, and 18 Groups Participate
Summary
The second phase of "Matsumoto Architecture Art Festival 2026 ADVANCE" will be held in Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture, from November 3 to December 13. Eighteen artist groups from Japan and abroad will participate, presenting 19 exhibitions at 18 facilities and 19 venues across the city. The festival began in 2022 as an art event that displays contemporary art in historical and modern architectural settings in Matsumoto. In 2026, it will be held as a main program of "East Asian Cultural City 2026 Matsumoto" in two phases. The first phase, "Video Art Festival," held from February to March, featured nine video works at the Matsumoto City Museum, while the second phase returns to the festival's original touring format, focusing on the relationship between architecture and artworks. Participating artists include Tomohiro Inaba, Kazuto Imura, Mihoko Ogaki, Kengo Kito, Nobuhiro Sasaki, Masaharu Sato, Shishiyamazaki, Julian Opie, Takashi Suzuki, teamLab, Takashi Nakajima, Yuki Harada, Kotaro Fukui, Naoki Honjo, Michael Rikio Ming Hee Ho, Hidetoshi Muramatsu, Ken Yonetani + Julia, and Lee Ufan. Notably, teamLab, participating for the first time, will exhibit a video work inspired by Ito Jakuchu's "square-grid paintings" technique at Kappo Matsumotokan, a nationally registered tangible cultural property, creating a dialogue with the sculptures by Ota Nankai and ceiling paintings by Kaneko Reikyo in the "Phoenix Room."
