Special Exhibition "140th Birth Anniversary: Textile Artist Yamaga Seika—Cosmic Imagination" (Kyoto City KYOCERA Museum of Art) Opening Report: Tracing the Footsteps of a Pioneer of Textile Art
Summary
The special exhibition "140th Birth Anniversary: Textile Artist Yamaga Seika—Cosmic Imagination" is open until December 20 at the Kyoto City KYOCERA Museum of Art. Yamaga Seika (1885–1981) was a textile artist who pioneered "hand-woven brocade" (teori nishiki), integrating design and weaving, and won a special prize at the 1927 Teiten exhibition. Her work spanned official exhibitions, festival decorations, architectural interiors, and luxury liner decorations, earning her the Order of Cultural Merit in 1969. This exhibition is the first major retrospective in 40 years, comprising six chapters. It features early works like the design for "Dutch Ship" (1927), experimental pieces using unconventional materials such as "Fighting Kangaroo" (1960), and the monumental "Constellations, Moon, Rocket" (1958), highlighting her innovative spirit and mastery.
