2026 Collection Exhibition II @ Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Art
Summary
Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Art will hold '2026 Collection Exhibition II' from October 20, 2026, to February 23, 2027. The exhibition explores the theme of 'avant-garde' with 'What is Avant-Garde!?', marking 40 years since the 1986 Centre Pompidou exhibition 'Japan Avant-Garde 1910-1970'. It traces Japanese prewar and postwar art in six chapters, from Western-influenced avant-garde to uniquely Japanese movements, and showcases new acquisitions from artists Tamayo Akamatsu, Michiko Hoshino, Yu Matsumoto, and Tomoko Yoneda. A related small exhibition, 'Noe Aoki: Moving Body', features new site-specific iron sculptures by Noe Aoki, which will be dismantled after the exhibition, emphasizing their temporary existence. From December 17, a special feature 'Wang Yiting and His Era: Modern Shanghai Art Circles and Japan-China Cultural Exchange' from the Ume Josetsu Collection will introduce modern Shanghai art and cultural exchange. Related events include lectures by Aomi Okabe, an artist talk by Noe Aoki, and a commemorative lecture by Masaki Itakura. Admission is 550 yen for adults, 400 yen for university students, and free for high school students and younger.
