Assembling Anew: Japanese New Artists vol. 23 @ Tokyo Photographic Art Museum
Summary
The Tokyo Photographic Art Museum is holding "Assembling Anew: Japanese New Artists vol. 23" from September 30, 2026 to January 17, 2027. This 23rd installment of the museum's ongoing series since 2002 focuses on how artists reconstruct memories, materials, techniques, and contexts into new images, questioning the blurred boundaries between reality and fiction, presence and absence. The five featured artists are Sayuri Ichida, Taro Karibe, Zai Nomura, Baku Hashimoto, and Asako Fujikura. Ichida presents her first Japanese installation using blackboards and silkscreen prints; Karibe introduces a series that disrupts generative AI's landscape recognition; Nomura explores the materiality of photography by burning portraits and recording the flames with long exposure; Hashimoto exhibits a new stop-motion animation installation; and Fujikura constructs a fictional city and society using live-action footage, CG, and AI. The exhibition includes five talk events with the artists and guests, gallery talks by the curator, and a catalog published on the opening day.
