What’s Coming to the Former Bank of Japan Kanazawa Branch? The Artworks to Be Exhibited… May Next Year, During the 21st Century Museum’s Long Closure (Hokkoku Shimbun)
Summary
The former Bank of Japan Kanazawa Branch, the main venue for the Kanazawa Machinaka Art Festival opening next May, will host contemporary art by world-renowned artists. In the underground vault, a "World Map" made of glass marbles arranged on the floor by Palestinian artist Mona Hatoum will be displayed. In the first-floor lobby, Olafur Eliasson's "Inverted Situation"—a massive 15-meter-wide, 5-meter-diameter sculpture combining stainless steel and mirrors—will be installed. Both are from the collection of the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, with the map shown for the first time in 14 years and the Eliasson work in 13 years. A performance by the dance duo Agnes Yoshii will also take place. The festival will run during the museum's long closure, using the former bank as a year-round venue and setting up seasonal locations around the city, with collaborative events such as the "Wakuwaku Children's Cultural Festival" on November 28–29. Committee members suggested increasing awareness and multilingual support.
