Ryuichi Sakamoto's Photographs Taken in the 1980s to Be Exhibited: "PHOTO RYUICHI SAKAMOTO" at SAI
Summary
The exhibition "PHOTO RYUICHI SAKAMOTO" will open on October 17 at SAI in Shibuya, Tokyo, featuring photographs taken by Ryuichi Sakamoto (1952–2023) in the 1980s while he was active as a musician on the world stage. Sakamoto did not only record his glamorous activities; he also captured everyday moments, travel scenes, people, and fragments of light. The exhibition, sponsored by Polaroid, will display his Polaroid photographs alongside the actual Polaroid equipment he used. Polaroid, known for its instant images and one-of-a-kind nature, was used by artists such as Andy Warhol and Cy Twombly in the 1970s and 80s. Sakamoto also used the medium to record landscapes, people, and light during his travels. A photo book titled "PHOTO RYUICHI SAKAMOTO" will be pre-released at SAI, comprising two volumes—"Polaroid" and "Snapshot"—with planning and editing by Shigeo Goto and Rika Kuri, and design by Shuzo Hayashi. The case uses random combinations of 120 colors of Takeo's NT Rasha paper. The price is 9,680 yen. During the exhibition, talk shows will be held: one on October 17 with critic Atsushi Sasaki and editor Shigeo Goto, and another on November 1 with artist Michihiro Shimabuku and Goto. A Polaroid workshop is scheduled for October 24. This exhibition offers a chance to see the 1980s through Sakamoto's personal lens, complementing his musical and sonic explorations.
