Moving! Exhibition: Art of Light, Sound, and Movement
Summary
This exhibition at Takamatsu Art Museum explores the history and development of postwar Japanese contemporary art through the keyword "movement," drawing primarily from the museum's collection. After World War II, Japanese art saw the emergence of works that transcended traditional painting and sculpture. In the 1950s, members of avant-garde groups such as Jikken Kobo (Experimental Workshop) and the Gutai Art Association actively incorporated new media. Artists like those in Fluxus and Hi-Red Center expanded expression through "moving" performances and events. Venues for presentation increased, including the open-submission Yomiuri Independent Exhibition, events combining stage and film, international art exhibitions, the 1970 World Exposition, and outdoor sculpture exhibitions, while materials and expressive methods diversified. Later, with technological advances, light, sound, and video became more accessible, and installation works combining these, as well as participatory "moving" works, became established forms. Since opening in 1988, Takamatsu Art Museum has collected postwar Japanese contemporary art as one of its acquisition policies and has actively introduced emerging artists through exhibitions and events. This exhibition, centered on that collection, revisits the history and development of Japanese contemporary art through the keyword "movement." It invites viewers to enjoy artists' ceaseless new challenges through "moving" works. The exhibition runs from October 10 to November 29, 2026, at Takamatsu Art Museum. Admission is 1,200 yen for general admission and others. Closed on Mondays (open on October 12 and November 23), October 13, and November 24.
