"Milton Avery" Exhibition (Working Title) to Be Held at the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo in October 2027
Summary
The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, located in Takebashi, Tokyo, will hold the "Milton Avery" exhibition (working title) from October 9, 2027, to January 30, 2028. Milton Avery (1885–1965) was an American painter known for his delicate colors, flat pictorial surfaces, and a naive yet meticulously calculated composition. He influenced painters such as Mark Rothko, Barnett Newman, and Adolph Gottlieb, who later became key figures of American Abstract Expressionism, and played an important role at a turning point in American art. This exhibition will be the first full-scale introduction of Avery in Japan, surveying his career through works from his early to late periods, including masterpieces. It will also compare his works with those of Japanese artists of the same generation—Yasuo Kuniyoshi, Morikazu Kumagai, and Chikkyo Ono—to explore the characteristics of Avery's art while discovering resonances that transcend time and cultural backgrounds.
