What Do We Call Value? Reexamining the Meaning of "Economy": The 18th Lyon Biennale
Summary
The 18th Lyon Biennale, founded in 1991 by Thierry Raspail and now under artistic director Isabelle Bertolotti, features guest curator Kathryn Nichols. The theme, "Passer d’un rêve à l’autre (From one dream to another)," draws on Walter Benjamin's Arcades Project and Robert Filliou's "poetic economy" to explore an economy not limited to money and markets. With a budget of about 8 million euros, it showcases 400 works by 120 artists from 42 countries. Visitors are guided through the old city's traboules, then to macLYON, the Museum of Decorative Arts and Textiles, and Les Grandes Locos. The act of moving through the city becomes part of experiencing the works, prompting a reconsideration of value and economy.
