Exhibition by artist Yu Matsumoto, who is also active as a courtroom artist, held at Kurobe City Museum of Art. Evoking imagination for the invisible
Summary
A solo exhibition by artist Yu Matsumoto, who is also active as a courtroom artist, titled "Yu Matsumoto: You of the Image" will be held at the Kurobe City Museum of Art in Toyama Prefecture from October 10 to December 20. Born in Kyoto in 1993, Matsumoto has conducted on-site interviews based on incidents encountered through news and courtroom sketching, and produced lithograph works in which the parties involved are replaced with his own figure. This exhibition showcases nearly all of Matsumoto's works, from early pieces to new creations, aiming to capture the expansion of the artist's own perspective that emerges through the works. The exhibition features about 60 works divided into eight sections, presenting Matsumoto's activities from multiple angles. The sections are "News and Prints," "Court and Prints," "Story and Prints," "Industry and Prints," "Movement and Prints," "Daily Necessities and Lithographs," "Everyday Life and Prints," and "Postscripts of Prints." The structure allows viewers to compare works across sections while touching on changes in Matsumoto's position and the multifaceted role unique to lithography. In "Postscripts of Prints," Matsumoto attempts to focus on the process of image dissemination and reinterpretation that occurs after a work is presented. Through the "postscripts" born when works are mediated to new audiences in society, he highlights how people accept and confront events. In "Movement and Prints," works set in Toyama are displayed. Based on the 1918 Rice Riots, a protest movement by women in Toyama suffering from soaring rice prices, Matsumoto visited Toyama himself and conducted repeated interviews to create the works. The venue will exhibit works that, while premised on the journalistic nature of lithography in print history, feature compositions that waver between news and the viewer. Approximately 60 lithographs using aluminum and stone plates will be shown.
