Walk the City and Encounter Photographic Works from Around the World: Urban Art Festival "T3 PHOTO FESTIVAL TOKYO" Now Held in the Yaesu–Ginza Area
Summary
The urban art festival "T3 PHOTO FESTIVAL TOKYO" is being held until October 26 across multiple venues spanning the Yaesu, Nihombashi, Kyobashi, and Ginza areas. The theme is "A New World of 'To' Opened by Photography," using the Japanese conjunction "to" (and) to explore photography as an art that connects people, nature and city, and artworks with viewers, questioning the possibilities of the world through these connections. T3 founder Ihoko Hayami states that while "to" is used for binary oppositions like "self and other" or "nature and city," Eastern perspectives such as "two sides of the same coin" or "yin and yang" offer a different way to view the world. One of the main exhibitions is a solo show by Zanele Muholi, "When Things Become Crowns," at the newly opened TOFROM YAESU TOWER (September 2026). Muholi's series "Praise the Dark Lioness" features self-portraits adorned with household tools as crowns, highlighting the ownership and domination implied in English verbs for taking photos: "take," "capture," and "shoot." By reversing film characteristics that favored white skin, Muholi emphasizes the blackness of African skin with pride, powerfully asserting Black African identity. The fusion of urban scenery and African celebratory space at the tower's first floor is striking.
