Monet and Ukiyo-e Intersect in a Massive Space: Yokohama's "THE MOVEUM" Second Program Opens
Summary
THE MOVEUM YOKOHAMA by TOYOTA GROUP, an immersive museum housed in a roughly 6,000-square-meter warehouse at Yamashita Pier in Yokohama, launched its second program on October 24, running through March 31, 2027. The first program, themed on Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele, drew significant attention. The second program focuses on the relationship between Impressionist painter Claude Monet (1840–1926) and Japanese ukiyo-e. Gianfranco Iannuzzi, who has over 30 years of experience in immersive art, serves as design and creative director, with the Pola Museum of Art in Hakone, which holds many Monet works, providing academic supervision. Monet is known to have avidly collected ukiyo-e by Katsushika Hokusai, Utagawa Hiroshige, and Kitagawa Utamaro. The main theater program, "Impressionist Monet and Ukiyo-e [The Japanese Beauty That Captivated Monet]," is projected in the approximately 1,800-square-meter THE MOVEUM THEATER, where masterpieces leave their frames and spread across the entire space with music and light.
