Hans Haacke's First Large-Scale Retrospective in Asia to Be Held at Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo: A 60-Year Trajectory Questioning Politics, Economics, and Art Institutions
Summary
The Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo will host "Hans Haacke: Information Flow," the first major retrospective in Asia of Hans Haacke, a pioneer of institutional critique. The exhibition runs from February 6 to May 16, 2027. Born in Cologne, Germany, in 1936, Haacke moved to the United States in 1961 and played a key role in the development of conceptual art in 1960s New York. The retrospective comprehensively presents over 60 years of his practice, from early works dealing with natural phenomena and living systems to works examining political and economic power and art institutions. Haacke won the Golden Lion at the 1993 Venice Biennale for "Germania." The exhibition begins with photographs he took while working as a gallery attendant at documenta 2 (1959) and traces his diverse approaches to visualizing invisible "systems," from natural phenomena to social structures.
