Australian Art Comes to Kyoto Temples: First Participation in CURATION⇄FAIR | art NIKKEI
Summary
From November 6 to 8, 2026, the "CURATION⇄FAIR Kyoto 2026" will take place at temples in Kyoto's Nishijin area, featuring two Melbourne galleries, CAVES and Conners Conners Gallery, as first-time international exhibitors. Storm Gold, director of CAVES, was drawn to the contrast of presenting contemporary art in historic temple spaces and will show works by Japanese-born sculptor Noriko Nakamura and Melbourne-based artist Anna Varendorff. Nakamura explores the relationship between the human body and nature through limestone and bronze, while Varendorff, who began with jewelry and metalwork, creates larger sculptural works addressing labor and feminism. Ry Haskings of Conners Conners Gallery decided to participate partly due to his connection to Kyoto from living there about 20 years ago, and plans to exhibit an installation by co-director Narelle Desmond. Both galleries aim to respect the cultural constraints of the temple venues while conveying the diversity of Australian contemporary art to Japanese audiences and fostering international dialogue.
