IAMAS 30th Anniversary Exhibition "the Augmentation" Held in Tokyo: How Do AI and VR Change Our Perception?
Summary
The exhibition "the Augmentation—Short Circuit between Technology and Art," commemorating the 30th anniversary of the Institute of Advanced Media Arts and Sciences [IAMAS] in Ogaki, Gifu Prefecture, will be held at SHIBAURA HOUSE in Shibaura, Tokyo, from November 21 to 23. Based on two IAMAS master's project researches, "Augmented State Project" and "Hermeneutics of Technology," the exhibition focuses on how technologies such as AI and XR transform our perception and body, and reexamines the relationship between technology and art.
"Augmented State Project" explores the relationship between altered consciousness/perception and media. It exhibits a reconstructed device of 《Dreamachine》 devised by Brion Gysin and others, and 《Dreamachine VR》, which extends its principle into VR. It also introduces IAMAS graduate Ayumu Nagai's VR work 《Virtual Hallucinogen》, drawing attention to the relationship between the physical body and virtual environments.
The other project, "Hermeneutics of Technology," is a practice of re-creating existing media art works by hand. The exhibition shows a re-creation of yang-tsu's 《On the Principle of Graffiti》, and for Ryota Kuwakubo's 《The 10th Sentiment (Point, Line, Plane)》 and Soichiro Mihara's 《Study of Air》, it presents documentation of the re-creation process. In an era when advanced technology is becoming a black box, the project aims to verify the technologies and production processes that constitute works, and to reinterpret technology from within the time of production.
During the exhibition, talk events and research meetings will be held by Ryota Kuwakubo, Minoru Hatanaka, and others. The three days will broaden the perspective from the question of what can be done with technology to the question of how to understand and engage with technology itself.
