Special Exhibition "Places Where Words Overlap" Held at the National Museum of Art, Osaka: Looking at History and Memory through "Contact Zones" Where Languages and Cultures Intertwine
Summary
The National Museum of Art, Osaka, in Nakanoshima, will hold a special exhibition titled "Places Where Words Overlap" from December 1 to March 14, 2027, curated by museum researcher Ayako Takemoto. While translation apps have lowered language barriers, language is more than a tool for communication—it shapes culture and art and moves our thoughts and consciousness. The exhibition examines Asian regions through photography and video, using "contact zones" where different languages and cultures meet as a lens. It focuses on areas that experienced colonialism, war, and division, and whose unique histories arose from linguistic and cultural contact, inviting viewers to reflect on where we live today. Artists include Kenshichi Heshiki, Motoyuki Shitamichi, Cao Fei, Toshiro Maeda, Saburo Muraoka, Chikako Yamashiro, Sayaka Uehara, Meiro Koizumi, Ilya Kabakov, Keizo Kitajima, Natalia Papaeva, Moon Kyungwon & Jeon Joonho, Noriaki Takedawa, Kei Imazu, Ho Rui An, and Cary Yamoka.
