Ryuichi Sakamoto's Final Piano Performance Revived as "Raw Sound": "Ryuichi Sakamoto | Dialogue" Featuring Haruma Kakuno, Daito Manabe, and Others
Summary
The project "Ryuichi Sakamoto | Dialogue" will take place at the cultural facility MoN Takanawa: The Museum of Narratives in Takanawa, Tokyo, from December 24 to 26 and January 8 to 17, 2027. It aims to pass on the music and ideas of the late musician Ryuichi Sakamoto, who passed away in 2023, to the next generation. Utilizing performance data such as MIDI left by Sakamoto, the project creates new musical experiences through collaboration with artists, and consists of two programs. From December 24 to 26, the audiovisual performance "D" by pianist Haruma Kakuno and artist Daito Manabe will be staged. Kakuno, who has been greatly influenced by Sakamoto's music, will perform Sakamoto's works alongside a self-playing piano using the archived performance data, creating a musical dialogue between Sakamoto's recorded performance and Kakuno's current performance. Manabe, who has collaborated with Sakamoto numerous times, will construct sound and visuals based on Sakamoto's past data as well as data he himself captured at a live performance in 2020. Using spatial audio technology and visual direction, he will create a space where Sakamoto's and Kakuno's performances intersect. The content will also engage with the soundscapes and electronic music that Sakamoto explored.
