Summary
The Henri Matisse exhibition "Matisse: The Poetics of Black and White—Focusing on the Print Collection of the Pierre and Tana Matisse Foundation" will be held at the National Museum of Western Art in Ueno, Tokyo, from March 20 to July 19, 2027. Organized with special cooperation from the Pierre and Tana Matisse Foundation in New York, the exhibition will center on the foundation's print collection and also include related paintings and drawings. Matisse worked throughout his life on prints and illustrated books, producing over 800 prints. Under the theme of "black and white," the exhibition aims to shed new light on the significance and appeal of his prints and illustrated books, and to deepen consideration of the relationship between line and space and of color through comparative displays with paintings and drawings. It also seeks to provide direct understanding of Matisse's printmaking process through displays of rare original plates and comparisons of paper types.
