"MOT Annual 2027" Opens at Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo: Reexamining Past Memories and Experiences Through Four Artists' Embodied Practices
Summary
The Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo in Kiyosumi-Shirakawa will present the group exhibition "MOT Annual 2027: Embodied Passage" from February 20 to May 30, 2027. Now in its 21st edition, this year's installment features four artists: Yuki Kobayashi, Saori Hara, Mayuko Inui, and tsu-tsu. Centering on new works, the exhibition examines past memories and others' experiences through diverse embodied practices such as martial arts, choreography, singing, and acting, alongside video, installation, photography, and drawing. The theme "Embodied Passage" refers to the act of taking on past events and others' experiences into one's own body and reconfiguring one's relationship with the world, exploring how sensations and knowledge that cannot be fully captured by words or records are inherited and transformed through the body. The architect collective GARAGE (Shun Odagiri, Kenji Seo, Mizuho Watanabe) designs the exhibition space, arranging works so that they connect loosely with the space through visitors' movement and the passage of time. During the exhibition, performances based on each artist's practice will be presented, along with a collaborative performance by the four artists developed through dialogue, with Shun Ikezoe accompanying the process and recording it as a video work.
