[Tokyo/Online] The 21st Refugee Film Festival 2026
Summary
The 21st Refugee Film Festival 2026, organized by the UNHCR Association Japan, will be held online and at theaters in Tokyo. Launched in 2006, this is Japan's first film festival focusing on refugees, aimed at broadening empathy and support for refugees in Japanese society. To date, 279 films from around the world have been screened, with over 100,000 cumulative attendees. This 21st edition highlights the resilience of refugees who overcome hardship, screening eight films including five Japan premieres. The works depict people displaced from their homelands by conflict, persecution, and climate change, set in places such as Palestine, Syria, Ukraine, and Afghanistan. Seven films will be streamed online, and three theatrical screenings will be held at two venues in Tokyo, with talk events featuring directors and actors after screenings. Online seminars on refugee issues and society are also planned during the festival period. The festival runs from November 5 to December 6, 2026.
