James Turrell Large-Scale Exhibition to Open at Immersive Art Center Superblue Kyoto in Early 2027
Summary
Superblue, the immersive art center based in Miami, will open its first overseas location, Superblue Kyoto, in early 2027 in the southeastern area of Kyoto Station. The opening long-term exhibition will be a major solo show by contemporary artist James Turrell, who explores light and perception. The site is across from teamLab Biovortex Kyoto, which opened in October 2025, and is part of a project based on Kyoto City's revitalization plan for the area, aiming to create a community centered on culture, arts, and youth. Turrell, born in Los Angeles in 1943, has consistently explored light, space, and human perception for over half a century since the mid-1960s. He received the National Medal of Arts in 2013 and the Praemium Imperiale in 2021. The opening exhibition will comprehensively present works from his early 1960s pieces to his latest, systematically introducing his diverse approaches and creating a space that reveals the presence of light usually unnoticed and deepens the experience of seeing. Details including the full list of works, ticket information, and the official opening date will be announced around December 2026.
