The Michinooku Art Festival Yamagata Biennale, which Tohoku University of Art and Design has held biennially since 2014, will relaunch as the Michinooku Art Festival in 2026. The first edition, themed "Yama no Hikari" (Light of the Mountains), focuses on Yamagata's natural environment and the creativity of its people. The main venue, the Yamagata Museum of Art, will display works created by artists from various genres who visited Yamagata, as well as works by local citizens. The square in front of the museum will host a market gathering food and crafts from across Yamagata, along with performances and theater related to Yamagata. The festival runs from November 5 to 15, 2026. Participating artists include Toshiaki Ishikura, Yu Kusanagi, Junko Goto, Shun Sasa, Koneru + Osamu Sandan, Keijiro Suga, Yuichi Takahashi, Tomoko Hisamatsu, Fuefuki Merun, and Yuji Iwaki. Numerous related events are planned, including markets, performances, talks, and workshops.
