Who Is Making the Sound? Tarek Atoui Revisits Creation and Collaboration at Tate Modern
Summary
At Tate Modern in London, Lebanese-born, Paris-based artist Tarek Atoui presents "Hold," a large-scale sound installation in the approximately 35-meter-high Turbine Hall, on view from October 13, 2025 to April 11, 2027 as the 11th Hyundai Commission. Wind instruments, drums, stones, and fabric are suspended in the space, where wind, electronic controls, and improvisation by musicians create a continuously changing acoustic environment. Atoui began with electronic music and improvisation, and through collaborations with deaf individuals and projects that reverse the usual order of instrument-making—recording museum instruments and having craftsmen create new instruments from those sounds—he has explored the relationship between listening and making. In "Hold," he reweaves a vocabulary of instruments developed over more than a decade into a new composition within the monumental architecture, transforming the hall itself into a playable instrument.
