Summary
On November 3, 2025, the Imperial Palace Sannomaru Shozokan in Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo, fully opened. This museum preserves and exhibits art passed down through the imperial family. It first opened in 1993 and has undergone renovations costing about 15.5 billion yen since 2019. The exhibition space has expanded to 1,280 square meters, about eight times its previous size. The museum houses approximately 6,300 artworks, including 10 National Treasures and 13 Important Cultural Properties. To mark the full opening, a special exhibition titled "Imperial Treasures: Beauty Blooming" runs until January 24, 2027, displaying about 190 imperial-related artworks in three periods. For the first time within the Imperial Palace, treasures from the Shosoin Repository related to Emperor Shomu of the Nara period are exhibited, along with works such as Ito Jakuchu's "Sunrise Phoenix" from the Edo period. A new "Ote Rest Area" has also been built in front of the museum, featuring the palace's first cafe and shop.
