Time Out Tokyo
Five curated art exhibitions in Tokyo this September 2026 span from Renaissance masterpieces to street art and Nordic design.

Summary

September 2026 brings an exceptional lineup of art exhibitions in Tokyo spanning eras and borders. From contemporary Japanese and Asian expressions to street art, Renaissance masterpieces from the Louvre, and Scandinavian design that enriches daily life, the variety of approaches is remarkable. Visitors can explore new artistic encounters at museums throughout the city as autumn begins to color the streets.

The first exhibition at the National Art Center features the Louvre Museum's Renaissance Art collection with over 50 works including Leonardo da Vinci's masterpiece 'La Scapigliata.' The second at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, titled 'Synchronic Constellation,' presents approximately 200 modern artworks from Taiwan and Japan. The third exhibition at the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum, 'Duet: Asian Contemporary,' showcases six Chinese and Japanese photographers and videographers. The fourth at the Shibuya City Shimura Art Museum, titled 'On the Street, Mind if We Join?' explores street art and publicness. The fifth at the Setagaya Art Museum features approximately 200 Swedish textile pieces in 'Swedish Textile: Nordic Design Rooted in Life and Nature.'
