The Wadatsumi no Koe Memorial Hall near the University of Tokyo displays numerous letters and diaries from students who died in the final stages of the Pacific War. Recently, about 200 items belonging to Itaru Maruo, a 25-year-old Tokyo Imperial University art student who died of illness, were donated. Maruo studied aesthetics and art history, also captaining the baseball team, before being drafted to China in 1944. He fell ill and died in a military hospital in Manchuria in August 1945. His surviving writings and sketches reflect his passion for art and knowledge. The memorial, nearing its 20th anniversary, uses these personal documents to warn against repeating the war that stole the futures of the young.
