Belgian artist Ann Veronica Janssens' first solo exhibition in Japan, titled 'Tokyo, Ginza 5-chome 4-1', has opened at the Ginza Maison Hermès Le Forum. The title uses the venue's address, which the artist describes as having a 'musicality' and serving as an 'invitation' to a specific place and time, evoking a 'rendezvous'. Throughout her career, Janssens has moved beyond solid materials to focus on perception itself, using elements like light, sound, fog, and reflective surfaces to question how viewers perceive space and time. The exhibition features works that transform immaterial elements like light and air to create different contours within the existing space. In the 8th-floor gallery, works in glass and metal dominate. 'Magic Mirrors (Pink and Green)' (2013) uses cracked glass layers to produce shifting colors and shine depending on the viewer's position and light. 'Water Glass Roll (110)' (2017) is a cast glass ring with uneven transparency, through which the surrounding environment can be seen. Wall-mounted pieces employ 'structural color', where hues emerge from light interference rather than pigment. 'IPE 250' (2010-13) is a steel beam with one mirror-polished face that reflects the surroundings, changing as viewers move.
