On September 15, 2026, the National Center for Art Research (NCAR) and AWARE (Archives of Women Artists, Research & Exhibitions) opened the call for applications for the FY2027 "NCAR × AWARE Women Artists Research Fellowship." The fellowship, launched in December 2025, aims to strengthen research on Japanese women artists and its international foundations. In its first edition for FY2026, sculptor and critic Odawara Nodoka and Tokyo Photographic Art Museum curator Yamada Yuri were selected. AWARE is a non-profit organization based in Paris, France, dedicated to making women artists' achievements visible and reconstructing art history from a more gender-equal perspective; it now operates as a department of the Centre Pompidou.
The fellowship targets research on women artists (including those who identify as women or as non-binary) active in the visual arts who have a connection to Japan. Applicants must be researchers, curators, or professionals with relevant experience in researching women artists and must reside or stay in Japan during the research period (nationality and residency status are not requirements). Both individual and collaborative research proposals are accepted. About two grants will be awarded, with a research period from April 1, 2027, to March 31, 2028, and a maximum grant of 5,000 euros equivalent (approximately 850,000 yen) per project. Research outcomes will be published on both NCAR and AWARE websites, and results will be notified to applicants by email by late February 2027. The application period runs until October 31, 2026. The organizers are NCAR, AWARE, and the Centre Pompidou – Musée national d'art moderne.
