Portal: AfroAsia @ The 5th Floor
Summary
The 5th Floor in Tokyo is presenting "Portal: AfroAsia," an exhibition by the Korea-based artist collective AfroAsia Collective, which operates from Space AfroAsia in Dongducheon, from 16 October to 29 November 2026. Founded in 2021 by curator Sohng A-Moon and artist-filmmaker Choi Won-jun, the collective inherits the spirit of the 1955 Asian-African Conference (Bandung Conference) and seeks to forge new cultural solidarities between Africa and Asia through contemporary art. Focusing on the US military base towns of Bosan-dong in Dongducheon and Paju, the exhibition uses historical records, archival materials, portraits of local community members, and photographs of streets and everyday scenes to trace how spaces shaped by military necessity are transforming into sites of new social relations and community. The title's "portal" refers to a passage where different places, times, histories, and experiences intersect to generate new relationships. The exhibition presents "AfroAsian futurism" not as a simple fusion of African and Asian aesthetics but as a methodology and practice for creating new forms of collectivity and futures from solidarity between Africa and Asia, whose histories intersect through colonialism, militarization, and exclusion.
