Contemporary Art Exhibition in ASK Kohoku: "Teppei Kaneuji: Smoke and Mist, Nakasendo Kashiwabara-juku" – artscape
Summary
From October 3 to December 13, 2026, the contemporary art exhibition "Teppei Kaneuji: Smoke and Mist, Nakasendo Kashiwabara-juku" will be held at the Kashiwabara-juku History Museum and other venues in Maibara City, Shiga Prefecture. As the second installment of ASK for the fiscal year Reiwa 8, it invites artist and sculptor Teppei Kaneuji to Kashiwabara, a town that flourished as a post station on the old Nakasendo. Kaneuji is known for a collage-like method that liberates everyday objects from their existing meanings and uses and connects them, creating landscapes where reality and imagination, past and future intermingle. His practice spans sculpture, installation, video, and performance. The title "Smoke and Mist" refers to two elements he has often explored: smoke as an artificial phenomenon produced by combustion and mist as a natural phenomenon in which water vapor cools into tiny droplets. Though visually similar in that fine particles float in the air, their differing natures evoke changes and possibilities born from crossing boundaries. In this exhibition, under this theme, Kaneuji will reconfigure his past works in response to the local space and create and display new installations based on Kashiwabara's history, climate, and people's lives. Venues include the former sake brewery (Yaito Juku), Kashiwabara-juku History Museum, Nishimachi Kaido Cultural Exchange Center Rokuju, and the former Nakamura Residence; visitors are asked to first go to the former sake brewery (Yaito Juku).
