"Tokyo Jazz Club" to Be Held for 8 Days in Jimbocho, Tokyo: An Immersive Art and Performance Event in a Former Capsule Hotel
Summary
"Tokyo Jazz Club" is a limited-time cultural event held from November 1 to 8 in a former capsule hotel near Jimbocho, Tokyo, in conjunction with Art Week Tokyo (AWT). The eight-floor venue comprises a stage, exhibition spaces, listening booths, a whiskey bar, a game room, and art capsules, each contributing its own rhythm to a unified experience. The event inherits the nomadic spirit of the Basel Social Club, founded in Basel, Switzerland, in 2022, and draws inspiration from Japanese jazz culture, including jazz kissa and listening bars. The venue is the former Nine Hours Otemachi, redesigned by the Tokyo- and Brussels-based architecture and design collective "UM," with lighting by the Paris-based spatial design studio "Matière Noire." A live performance program co-curated with Silas Goverville features artists such as Akira Onda, Geinoh Yamashirogumi, Standing on the Corner (Gio Escobar), Esben Weile Kjær, Jim C. Nedd, Nuu Peace, OKI, Riki Hidaka, and RQRQ (Yuka Ijichi, Kiyohiro Takada, Mitsuru Tabata), among many others. Additional highlights include a joint talk by Theaster Gates and Arthur Jafa and a listening session hosted by Arthur Jafa. Exhibiting artists include Japanese artists Yuko Mohri, Shinro Ohtake, Keiichi Tanaami, Kimiyo Mishima, Chim↑Pom, and GILLOCHINDOX☆GILLOCHINDAE, alongside international artists such as Yoko Ono, Gabriel Orozco, Maurizio Cattelan, and Arthur Jafa. Tickets are available via ArtSticker and at the venue reception during the event.
