Dieter Rams's Official Traveling Exhibition Held in Japan for the First Time: Exploring the Philosophy of "Less, but Better" at Tamagawa University
Summary
The official traveling exhibition of Dieter Rams (born 1932), a leading German industrial designer, titled "Dieter Rams A Look Back and Ahead / Less, but Better: What Dieter Rams Taught Us 'Less, but Better'," will be held at Tamagawa University in Kaminoge, Tokyo, from November 17 to December 16. This is the first time the exhibition will be held in Japan. It is an official traveling exhibition planned and supervised by the Dieter and Ingeborg Rams Foundation, and will be held as the opening commemorative exhibition of the gallery "Sala Blu" within the "KCC (Kaminoge Cultural Crossing)" cultural hub, which Tamagawa University established in April 2026 as a project commemorating its 90th anniversary. Dieter Rams was born in Germany in 1932. He joined Braun in 1955 and, as head of the company's design department, worked on numerous home appliances. He is known for designs such as the record player "SK 4" (1956), as well as radios and audio equipment, and his work, which combines functionality with clear forms, has had a significant influence on contemporary product design. Rams's "10 Principles of Good Design" include "Good design is innovative," "Good design makes a product useful," and "Good design is environmentally friendly," outlining the ideal state of design. At its foundation is the philosophy of "Less, but Better."
