[Imperial Family Sketch] Family Views Japanese Art Exhibition
Summary
On the 6th, Emperor Naruhito, Empress Masako, and their eldest daughter Princess Aiko visited the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum in Ueno, Tokyo, to view the exhibition "British Museum Japanese Art Collection." They eagerly observed and asked questions about fusuma paintings by Kano Sogen Shigenobu from the late Azuchi-Momoyama to early Edo period. The exhibition featured about 200 items from the British Museum's approximately 40,000-piece Japanese collection, including Edo-period hanging scrolls and ukiyo-e prints. A series of fusuma paintings by Kano Sogen Shigenobu, previously held separately at the museum, an old family in Aomori Prefecture, and the Seattle Art Museum in the US, were reunited for the first time in about 150 years. Princess Aiko remarked on the impressive gold and silver leaf, while the Emperor asked about the placement of the ruler borders, impressing the guide with their broad knowledge. The animal-loving family paused happily before works depicting dogs and cats, demonstrating their close bond.
