A Deep Dive into the MOMAT Collection: Visiting the “Best School” of Modern Japanese Art
Summary
The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo (MOMAT) houses approximately 14,000 works of modern Japanese art. This article provides an in-depth look at the museum’s collection exhibition, “MOMAT Collection,” and its role as the “best school” for learning about modern Japanese art. The collection spans 3,000 square meters across 13 rooms on floors 4 to 2, with about four rotations per year displaying roughly 200 works each time. Visitors can trace the flow of Japanese art from the late 19th century to today through themed rooms. Twelve curators carefully select and display works, considering preservation, season, and exhibition composition. Acquisitions are evaluated for historical significance, artistic representativeness, relevance to existing holdings, condition, and price. The article highlights representative works in each room, and notes a collaboration with Fujingaho magazine in Room 1 “Highlights” on the 4th floor, featuring selections by nine individuals including Hiroshi Sugimoto, Miki Nakatani, and Kohei Shoji. The exhibition runs until January 11, 2027.
