Yoshikatsu Ikeuchi Exhibition "Liminal" Held at Kyoto City KYOCERA Museum of Art: An Experience of "Boundaries" Emerging Between Vision and Hearing
Summary
Composer and artist Yoshikatsu Ikeuchi's solo exhibition "Liminal" is being held in the "Hall of Light" at the Kyoto City KYOCERA Museum of Art until October 25. Ikeuchi has composed music for films including "Rage," which featured music by Ryuichi Sakamoto, and has actively presented artworks across Asia. The exhibition features 23 oil paintings, drawings, sculptural works, and a sound installation that utilizes the venue's acoustic properties. In the open space filled with natural light, the exhibition explores the theme of "distance" emerging between the different domains of vision and hearing, creating a dynamic experience in which the viewer's perception is constantly reconfigured. The pale portraits of children and boys appear at first as accessible figurative motifs, yet their inconsistent contours and unreadable gazes unsettle the viewer's cognition. Ikeuchi describes figurative imagery as "an entrance to shake the sense of 'understanding,'" expressing interest in the faint traces that escape language and the coexistence of forms disappearing and new forms emerging.
