From Ancient Rome to the Nuclear Age: "Jam Session: Ishibashi Foundation Collection × Hikaru Fujii WHOSE LIGHT?" (Artizon Museum) Report
Summary
The Artizon Museum in Kyobashi, Tokyo, is holding the exhibition "Jam Session: Ishibashi Foundation Collection × Hikaru Fujii WHOSE LIGHT?" from October 24 to January 31, 2027. "Jam Session" is a series the museum has held annually since opening in 2020, pairing the Ishibashi Foundation Collection with an artist; the seventh edition features Hikaru Fujii. Fujii uses installation, video, and workshops to create works starting from specific historical moments and social issues, examining through research and fieldwork the effects and meanings of contemporary and historical crises and structural violence on human and non-human beings. The exhibition focuses on "light" as a symbol of truth in the Allegory of the Cave from Book VII of Plato's Republic. It reverses the question from what the light illuminates to who illuminates it, critically reexamining the structure of truth itself. Along a timeline from antiquity through the Middle Ages, modernity, and the postwar era, 22 works from the Ishibashi Foundation Collection resonate with Fujii's works, including new pieces. The curator in charge is Anna Ueda of the Artizon Museum.
