Summary
The National Creative Kokeshi Art Exhibition, featuring a record 147 works from across Japan, opened on October 30 in Shibukawa City, Gunma Prefecture. Now in its 32nd year, the exhibition has been held annually since 1994 and showcases the largest number of pieces to date. Fifty artists from around the country are participating, including local masters Aoki Ryoka and Kato Tatsuo, both Modern Master Craftsmen and recipients of the Yellow Ribbon Medal. The display also includes works by emerging young artists and two artists in their twenties who moved to the city as regional revitalization cooperation volunteers and became captivated by creative kokeshi. To boost the event, the city encourages visitors to post photos of the works on social media, with some exceptions. The venue also features a painting contest for local elementary and junior high school students and a sales corner for creative kokeshi. The exhibition runs until November 5.
