Imperial Palace's Sannomaru Shozokan, displaying art and crafts related to the Imperial Family, to fully open on November 3; adjacent "Ote Rest House" with cafe
Summary
A commemorative ceremony was held on October 30 ahead of the full opening on November 3 of the Sannomaru Shozokan (Imperial Palace, East Gardens), which houses art and crafts related to the Imperial Family. The museum originally opened in 1993 as the Imperial Household Agency's Sannomaru Shozokan, and reconstruction into a new facility has been underway since 2019 to expand storage and exhibition space. In 2023, management and operation were transferred from the Imperial Household Agency to the National Institutes for Cultural Heritage, and the museum was renamed to its current name and partially opened; it was later temporarily closed for further construction. At the ceremony, Director Hiroyuki Shimatani said, "We will reliably protect and pass on to future generations the precious cultural properties inherited by the Imperial Family, and clearly convey their value and the relationship between the Imperial Family and culture to many people in Japan and abroad." From November 3, the commemorative special exhibition "Imperial Treasures: Where Beauty Blooms" will begin, and the "Ote Rest House," which includes a cafe and shop, will also open on the same day on the adjacent site.
