Collection Exhibition "Reunion: Messages from 17 Artists"
Summary
This exhibition traces the trajectory of exhibitions held by the Mito Art Tower Contemporary Art Center since its opening in 1990 through its collection. As the center has operated as a Kunsthalle focused on self-organized exhibitions rather than collecting and preserving artworks, its collection consists of works by artists invited for its programs—either works shown in its exhibitions or representative pieces by artists it has introduced. The exhibition presents about 50 works, from those acquired in the late 1980s just before opening to new acquisitions in 2026, including pieces shown for the first time. Media range widely from sculpture and painting to photography, installation, and participatory works, with creation dates spanning the 1960s to the 2020s. Some works were conceived specifically for the center's galleries and can literally be experienced only "here." From explorations of materials to works prompting imagination of another world, and from vast time scales and grand scales to reflections on "living" through negative history, the artists speak quietly yet eloquently. Explanatory materials and viewing guides are prepared for first-time contemporary art viewers and children. The exhibition runs from November 7, 2026 to January 31, 2027, with same-day general admission at 900 yen and other rates.
