Foujita's "Dream (Homage to La Fontaine)" , Highest Bid at Sotheby's Hong Kong, to Be Publicly Shown for First Time in 75 Years at Karuizawa Ang Museum
Summary
The Karuizawa Ang Museum in Karuizawa, Nagano Prefecture, is currently hosting the exhibition "Foujita in New York." In this exhibition, Tsuguharu Foujita's oil painting "Dream (Homage to La Fontaine)" (1949), which set the highest price at Sotheby's Hong Kong auction in September this year, will be on public view from November 10. This marks the first public display of the work in approximately 75 years. Painted during Foujita's stay in New York in 1949, the work is a representative example of his "anthropomorphic animal series." It was shown at his solo exhibition at the Mathias Komor Gallery in New York in 1949 and later at his Madrid solo exhibition in 1951, after which it remained hidden in a private collection for many years. Now acquired by the Karuizawa Ang Museum, the painting will be exhibited alongside "Homage to La Fontaine" (1949, Pola Museum of Art) and "Cat's Classroom" (1949, Karuizawa Ang Museum), which are being shown together for the first time in 76 years.
