SIDE CORE's exhibition "Hokuto Road Side" to be held at two venues in Hokuto City, Yamanashi, featuring new works
Summary
The art collective SIDE CORE will present the exhibition "Hokuto Road Side" jointly at two venues in Hokuto City, Yamanashi: Kiyoharu Art Village and GASBON METABOLISM. The exhibition runs from November 14 to February 28, 2027. Using "roads" and "movement" as clues, the exhibition focuses on the roads and logistics connecting Tokyo and Yamanashi, the natural environment of mountainous areas, and people's lives, exploring the potential of expression that connects different regions starting from the land of Hokuto. SIDE CORE began activities based in Tokyo in 2012, creating works staged in urban blind spots and gaps while referencing street culture thought. After the Great East Japan Earthquake prompted the realization that cities depend on other regions, the collective has reinterpreted "street" not as a specific urban space but as an expressive movement connecting regions through human movement and cultural chains. At Kiyoharu Art Village, the exhibition "Twilight Objects" presents a new series themed on "light on the road," focusing on lights such as car headlights and reflective materials, and featuring works including "a temporary state" (2026), which questions standardized functionality through hand-blown glass transformed from sake bottles, and "tarp-estry" (2026), which combines cloth that has finished its role on the street to examine the relationship between petroleum-based fibers and daily life. At GASBON METABOLISM, "Check the Dam" unveils a new series of video and sculptural works revolving around sabo (erosion control) dams scattered in the mountainous areas of Hokuto City. The works focus on the dams as nodes between the human-inhabited landscape and the harsh nature beyond, presenting the sculptural work "wood book" (2026), which combines wood and production offcuts in a folding-screen form, and the video work "check the dam" (2026), based on on-site research.
