A Space Where Sound and Imagery Continue to Fluctuate. Report on "RYUICHI SAKAMOTO + SHIRO TAKATANI AMBIENT KYOTO - TOKYO" (Azabudai Hills Gallery)
The full version of async - immersion by Ryuichi Sakamoto and Shiro Takatani is being shown for the first time in Tokyo at Azabudai Hills Gallery.Summary
"RYUICHI SAKAMOTO + SHIRO TAKATANI AMBIENT KYOTO - TOKYO" is being held at Azabudai Hills Gallery from August 28 to October 25. "AMBIENT KYOTO" is an exhibition composed of "sound," "art," and "space" based in Kyoto, which launched in 2022. The first edition, "BRIAN ENO AMBIENT KYOTO," introduced Brian Eno, the founder of ambient music. The second edition, "AMBIENT KYOTO 2023," exhibited async - immersion by Ryuichi Sakamoto and Shiro Takatani at the basement of the Kyoto Shimbun Building, using 29 speakers and 6 subwoofers. It was accompanied by live performances at the approximately 100-year-old former Kosei Center of the Kyoto Chuo Shinkin Bank, featuring Cornelius, Buffalo Daughter + Seiichi Yamamoto, and others.
The Tokyo exhibition features only async - immersion. While the work was shown in a rearranged form as async – immersion tokyo (2024) at "Ryuichi Sakamoto | Seeing Sound, Hearing Time" (Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, December 21, 2024 – March 30, 2025), this is the first time since 2023 that visitors can experience the full version with the same 26.4-meter-wide massive screen used in the Kyoto exhibition and spatial sound constructed for the venue. The sound director, as in the previous edition, is ZAK, known for his work on Sakamoto's later works.
