Summary
This article features Kawamura Bumpō's "Kamogawa Bugi Zukan" (c. 1805) from the British Museum's Japanese Art Collection. The scroll depicts a sumo tournament at the Kamo River, vividly capturing diverse audience expressions, though only men were permitted to attend. Kawamura Bumpō (1779–1821) was renowned for figure painting. The work is on view at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum until October 18, then at the Osaka Nakanoshima Museum of Art from October 31 to January 31, 2027.
