The Agency for Cultural Affairs announced a FY2027 budget request of 233.5 billion yen, up 2.2× from last year, with 64.9 billion earmarked for creator support.

Summary

The Agency for Cultural Affairs announced its budget request for fiscal year 2027 (Reiwa 9), totaling 233.5 billion yen—2.2 times the previous year’s 107.3 billion yen. Of this, 649 billion yen is earmarked for new creator support programs, with 608 billion yen directed toward talent development and creative infrastructure reform through a “challenge‑based” initiative. The government aims to achieve 20 trillion yen in overseas content sales by 2033, covering manga, anime, games, live‑action, music, and more, with support spanning planning, production, international distribution, and domestic reinvestment. Additional funding includes 57.3 billion yen for national cultural facilities, 1.22 billion yen for the National Museum of Nature and Science’s special exhibitions, 315 million yen for strengthening the Media Art National Center (tentative), and 104.2 million yen for a media‑art creation and dissemination plan. Contemporary art initiatives receive 137 million yen for global promotion, 30 million yen for a new domestic art platform linked to international fairs, and 19 million yen for global outreach hubs. The art‑ecosystem foundation project remains at 6.1 million yen, while cultural‑property preservation, including the “Cultural Property Craftsman Project,” sees a major increase to 936 billion yen, with 195 billion yen for national‑treasure conservation and 107 billion yen for disaster‑prevention facilities.
