Entangled Landscapes: Koki Hirai
Summary
Koki Hirai (b. 1996), born and raised in Kure, Hiroshima Prefecture, creates works that combine rotoscoped animation, three-dimensional models, and booklet texts, focusing on the history and present of the adjacent cities of Hiroshima and Kure. Hirai states that the history of a city and personal memory can feel so similar that they seem isomorphic, and that his long-standing interest in remembering and forgetting has recently come to seem inseparable from having been born and raised in Hiroshima. The exhibition introduces new works based on his interest in whether narrating/depicting the overlap of urban history and personal memory can be a practice of self-care. Visitors are invited to experience a sensation of time and space becoming entangled while moving between the "City of Peace" and the "Naval Port City," between urban history and personal memory, between memory and forgetting, and between video, three-dimensional objects, and booklets. Hirai says he is trying to imagine Hiroshima (Kure) as a more porous and breathable city. The exhibition runs from October 24, 2026 to January 24, 2027 at the Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art's B1 Museum Studio, with free admission.
