"What Time Is It Now?―Komura Settai and Tamayama Takuro" Exhibition Held at Shiseido Gallery. Tamayama's New Installation and Komura's Works Resonate Across Time
Summary
The exhibition "What Time Is It Now?―Komura Settai and Tamayama Takuro" will be held at the Shiseido Gallery in Ginza, Tokyo, from November 3 to February 28, 2027. Komura Settai was an artist active from the Taisho to early Showa periods who was deeply connected to Shiseido, including involvement in the establishment of the Shiseido typeface. Tamayama Takuro is a contemporary artist known for installations combining three-dimensional forms, light, video, and sound. In the Shiseido Gallery, which has watched over Ginza since its opening in 1919, the expressions of these two artists, separated by about 100 years, meet. The exhibition is curated by the emerging curator Kim Chuu, active in Japan and abroad. The title derives from a passage in Komura's late essay "Temple Pilgrimage": "It becomes unclear whether the present is now or long ago." The highlight is Tamayama's new installation, inspired by Komura's works, ideas, and the Ginza of his time, composed of light through frosted glass, translucent cloth, and polished stainless steel mirrors. In this space where light, images, and boundaries constantly change, visitors can experience a sense of time where past, present, and future overlap. The venue also presents three works Komura created while at Shiseido, along with films and materials of Ginza from his era, including the Shiseido Design Department and the "Kyukyukai" salon around the novelist Izumi Kyoka.
