Matsu Fusako | Takashi Nakajima Solo Exhibition: Water Traces – traces of energy –
Summary
The solo exhibition "Takashi Nakajima: Water Traces – traces of energy –" was held at the Shimoyama Art Forest Power Station Museum in Nyuzen, Toyama Prefecture, a museum opened in 1995 in a 1926 hydroelectric power station acquired from Hokuriku Electric Power. Nakajima used the stretch film he has long employed as a medium conveying the traces of water that once flowed through the plant. The show comprises two works: "Water Traces (mizu-ato)" on the first floor and "JACOB" on the second. On the first floor, transparent film is stretched in parallel between the two penstock pipes whose turbines were removed and the facing wall, using reflected light to evoke the immense volume and pressure of the water, with spaces allowing visitors to enter inside the installation. "JACOB" on the second floor installs film vertically, based on the image of water's circulation as energy distilled and returned to the sky. Nakajima describes his use of stretch film as an attempt to transform a packaging material meant to wrap and protect objects into a medium for redefining space itself, creating a space where familiar materials convey images of light and water.
