Shiga Lieko: Nanu mo Kanu mo @ Aomori Museum of Art
Summary
The Aomori Museum of Art will hold "Shiga Lieko: Nanu mo Kanu mo," the largest solo exhibition to date by Miyagi-based artist Shiga Lieko, from October 31, 2026 to March 14, 2027, commemorating the museum's 20th anniversary and 15 years since the Great East Japan Earthquake. Born in Aichi in 1980, Shiga moved to the Kitakama district of Natori, Miyagi in 2008, working as a local photographer and producing the photo series "Helix Coast" with residents' participation after the disaster. The exhibition title "Nanu mo Kanu mo" is a local dialect from the Sanriku coast whose meaning opens up depending on the user and context, variously suggesting "I give up!", "a sigh from the deep sea floor," or "absolutely everything." The exhibition mixes new and old photographic, video, text, and installation works born from Shiga's insight into "Tohoku," where she has been based since before and after the earthquake. It reconstructs the 2025 work "Nanu mo Kanu mo"—based on stories and images entrusted to the fictional character "Enao"—with support staff, presents 2022's "Where the Night Connects" and 2022–2023's "When the Wind Blows" in versions adapted for this exhibition, and includes completely new photographic and video works. During the run, numerous talk events themed on "Tohoku," "energy," "nuclear," and "image" will be held, and the museum shop will sell items from artists and makers connected to Shiga's Ishinomaki studio "ENA," including MIMIZU, Jinjitsu Hitsuji Works Lab., the Miyagi Association Connecting with the Tohoku Korean School IO, Sil, and Irregular Rhythm Asylum.
