Duet: Asian Contemporary (Tokyo Photographic Art Museum) Opening Report: Contemporary Photography and Video by Six Artists from Japan and China Resonate
Summary
The exhibition "Duet: Asian Contemporary" is on view at the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum until January 17, 2027. This group exhibition introduces photography and video works by six artists from China and Japan, and is the second in a series following "On Love: Asian Contemporary" held in 2018. It is co-curated by Tokyo Photographic Art Museum curator Takahiro Ito and Teng Qingyun, Executive Director of the Three Shadows Xiamen Photography Art Centre, and the four Chinese artists are being shown at a Japanese public museum for the first time. The title "Duet" refers to a musical form for two performers, and the exhibition focuses on relationships born from the intersection of multiple perspectives—land and history, self and other, past and present. The participating artists are Toshiya Murakoshi, Wang Tuo, Sui Taka, Luo Yang, Jiang Pengyi, and fumiko imano. Murakoshi questions the duality of photography through landscapes of Fukushima before and after the 2011 disaster, while Wang Tuo screens two works from his video series "The Northeast Tetralogy," depicting historical connections across Northeast China and Northeast Asia.
